Top 5 Things to Consider When Buying Your First Dildo

Top 5 Things to Consider When Buying Your First Dildo

    Daniel Beech |

Buying your first dildo should seem like quite an exciting experience. You’re sat there dreaming of how good it is going to be, how big it will feel, how realistic it will feel, and how you will use it.

I mean who wouldn’t want a perfect member they can rely on to fulfil their sexual cravings on command, every time?

But then you begin searching the online adult stores or you walk in store expecting to simply be able to pick up a ‘dildo’ and you’re greeted by this huge range and then you’re stumped and overwhelmed. You know the perfect match for you is out there, but you will need to comb through all the styles to pick the one that’s for you.

This will be easier for some than others, but with such a huge range it’s no surprise that many people need to take some time to carefully consider which they want.

To help you out, we’ve noted what we consider to be the top 5 things to consider when buying your first dildo sex toy.

    1. SIZE

MY DILDO IS TOO BIG EXAMPLE

The first thing most people usually think about when choosing a dildo is the size they want. Now most of you will fall into 1 of 2 categories.

In fact, the majority will fit into category 1. These are the people who immediately try to think of the biggest dildo that they can take, and then they go out and purchase it. 10 inches, 11 inches even 12 inches, the bigger the better they all say, until the 12 inch Darth Impaler has landed at their door step. Then you realise - oh wait… Wait a minute! I can’t even get a hand around this beast, let alone my… and next thing you know, customer service opens up your message and rest assured it goes something like “Hey sorry I didn’t realise the 12 Inch Darth Impaler XL Dildo was sooo big, any chance I could exchange it??”

The others, shall we call you – ‘sensible people’, start a bit smaller and if you’re not satisfied, you slowly work your way up. Our advice with dildos is to follow the sensible people, you don’t want something too big that could cause discomfort or potentially damage if your body isn’t used to a dildo of that size!

    Sensible Sized Dildo Example

At the end of the day, it’s not how big it is, it’s how you use it, and it’s definitely important that you can at least use it. A slightly smaller dildo has a ton of uses and will provide a lot more satisfaction than a dildo that is too big and causes pain, unless you’re into that of course!

To help you pick the perfect size and to help you realise the size of some of the dildos we stock, we’ve carefully listed all the dildo measurements in the product descriptions.

    You will find:

Total Length – This is the true total length from the tip to the base, this will include any suction cups or bases.

Insertable Length – This is the measurement from the tip of the dildo down to the balls or the bottom of the shaft. This is how much of the toy can realistically be inserted at any one time.

Circumference – This is a measurement that wraps around the thickest part of the shaft.

Diameter – This is a measurement directly across the thickest part of the shaft.

We provide all measurements in both inches and millimetres.

You can also use the navigation on our website to search for dildos of a specific size. For example, you are able to search for dildos with a specific total length and diameter. This could help you find something long but thin or short but fat, whatever floats your boat.

    2. SHAPE

    Realistic Dildo Shape Example

When picking a new dildo, you can be overwhelmed by the range of shapes and styles available. You will find on our website and in general that most dildos are penis (phallic) shaped. They include a penis shaped tip, a detailed shaft, and some balls. These are called ‘realistic dildos’ because they’re like a real penis and can be perfect for all kinds of sexual fantasies.

But by no means are these all the available options: Non phallic shaped – these are dildos that are simply not shaped like a penis but can be used in the same way. Perfect for individuals who may need that extra bit of privacy to keep their pleasure product secret.

    Flexible Dildo Example

Curved – This simply is a dildo that has been carefully curved or angled. These can be useful when trying to reach your prostate or G-spot.

Tapered – A dildo with a tapered tip is great for a beginner and for anal sex. The tapered tip allows the toy to be inserted easier and more comfortably.

Double EndedGreat for double penetration, a double ended, or double headed dildo is a dildo with 2 insertable ends.

Ribbed, Ridged, Waves or Bumps – These are a type of textured dildo that are not necessarily realistic, but can provide extra stimulation due to the designs of the shaft.

    3. BASE

You should consider the type of base that you want your dildo to have to get the most out of it. Most dildos come with a suction cup base, this is essentially a sucker at the bottom of the dildo that can be used to attach the dildo to most smooth and flat surfaces. Suction cup dildos are great for hands free sexual fun, you can stick your dildo to the wall and ride it doggy style, or even better why not try the washing machine when it’s on a powerful spin cycle? Alternatively, you can stick it to the table and take it cowgirl or to the shower and take it standing up. We’re just giving you a few ideas, but with a little imagination you will realise there’s a lot of different possibilities.

A suction cup dildo can also be paired up with a strap-on harness, where the suction cup base is used to hold the dildo steady. So, if you’re looking for a highly versatile sex toy, then a suction cup dildo could be the one for you.

    Suction Cup Dildo Example

You can also buy dildos with flared bases and wedged bases. These bases are good for anal dildos and heavy dildos. They prevent the dildo from sliding in too far when being used anally. I mean the last thing anyone wants is an embarrassing visit to the A & E!

We would not recommend purchasing any dildos if they do not have either a suction cup, flared or wedge base as they pose serious health risks such as being sucked into the body and you may need a doctor to rescue it!

    4. MATERIAL

    Dildo Material Example

Not all materials are created equal. You should expect that dildos made from different materials will each act and feel different from one another. Some will be more stiff and rigid, whereas some will be much softer and realistic. Each have their own pros and cons with anything, and it’s really down to personal preference as to which is best. Why not try a few and see for yourself? Well since we’re writing here to help you pick your first dildo, we will provide some information below to help narrow down the search for your toy.

PVC/Jelly/Rubber – Most sex toys you will come across will include some type of PVC, Jelly or Rubber in their design. This is your standard run of the mill sex toy material that has been used for decades. The industry has had to shift over time to ensure all PVC, Jelly and rubber dildos are completely body safe. In the EU, all dildos must be phthalate free in accordance with EU regulation REACH. This material is very reliable, soft and flexible. It’s pretty easy to clean with warm soapy water, just make sure you do not leave these touching other sex toys, and always store them in a dry and dark place.

TPE/TPR – This is one of the most common dildo materials that we stock. It’s non-toxic, soft and flexible and makes for an ideal lifelike dildo material. These toys generally stand the test of time thanks to the strong material they can withstand regular use. The material is porous, so make sure you clean it well after each use, using warm soapy water and once cleaned leave to air dry. We supply tens of thousands of dildos in this material per year because it is very realistic, reliable and popular, which is one reason people have been giving us such great feedback – THANK YOU!

Silicone – Considered to be the pinnacle of sex toy materials, this highly soft and smooth material is used to make premium dildos which will last the test of time. Please remember that dildos can still be classed as silicone when only containing 10% silicone in their mixture. If you want pure silicone dildos, then you will need to specifically search for medical-grade silicone dildos. They are very easy to clean and feel luxurious. Generally, they are not as flexible as PVC or TPE, however they are still one of the most popular sex toy materials currently available.

Glass – Similar to the material used by Pyrex dishware, glass dildos are completely shatter proof, so you don’t need to worry about any accidents from the material, thankfully! They’re extremely easy to use, clean and use again as the glass easily cleans in warm soapy water. You will find it’s very rigid with no flexibility, but they make great probers that can hit specific angles of satisfaction.

Metal – The heaviest dildo material goes to metal and stainless steel. They’re super rigid and fulfilling. You will find they’re one of the easiest to clean and cannot react to any other sex toy materials. Expect to pay more for a metal dildo due to the material and time it takes to craft, but also expect it to last more than a decade!

Wood – It is possible to purchase bespoke wooden dildos. You should ensure you’ve purchased it from a reliable seller as the wood needs to be properly smoothed, I mean who wants a splinter down there? Generally, these dildos will be much more expensive as they’re not mass produced. You can expect it to be as stiff as a broom handle and it will be heavier than a standard dildo, all this comes with using wood of course!

Ceramic – It is possible to purchase ceramic dildos, although they are not very common. Like with wood, you can find bespoke manufacturers, however these are not mass produced, so you will likely pay a little extra. Similarly to wood, ceramic dildos are ultra-rigid with no flexibility, super smooth and usually heavier than an average dildo. They’re great for hitting specific spots, just make sure you don’t drop it!

    5. PRICE

This might sound basic, but you should consider what you can spend on a dildo before making the purchase. Although it isn’t a regular occurrence, in the past our customer service team have been contacted by customers who urgently required a refund because they’ve overspent on their dildo and cannot afford to pay some bills.

Now, one thing we learn when we’re young is that we get what we pay for, right? But at Sexy Emporium this isn’t always the case, and this isn’t just us blowing smoke up our own, we literally have tens of thousands of customers who would argue that they have purchased some of the best quality dildos available on the market for a fraction of the price at other retailers. How we actually manage to achieve this is something special behind the scenes that we will blog about more later; but for now, you can rest assured that just because our products may be cheap, doesn’t mean we’re cheap on quality.

In fact, with us that’s an important point to our success, we require high quality products so our customers are satisfied and loyal and will repeat. We’re not in this to sting you once and hope you come back, we know if you know dildos, you will be back for more, and more and even more! :D

Of course, you can spend more money on products with more specific features, or a larger size, or made from a specific material. But go ahead and compare any of our products against other major adult retailers or any adult shop and you will be shocked that we can sell products of such quality for the price we do.

If you have a limited budget then you will either have to save up for the specific dildo you want, or you can find a dildo that fits in your budget for now and come back later for another.

You will also learn with a bit of experience that spending more in this market, especially at other major retailers, can sometimes bring you less. More technical features and materials have a habit of breaking down. Some retailers have to charge a lot more for their products simply because they pack them with retail packaging which can dramatically increase the costs. To us, you want the best quality dildo possible for the best deal we can provide, and for us to provide our usual 5 star service. For us to do this, we cannot spend a few pounds on custom packaging which will increase the costs to you, for you to just throw the box away once it has been opened.

    Conclusion

To round up it all up, we hope that this has been useful for all new sex toy users looking to make that big step to owning their first dildo sex toy! You should now have an idea of the main things you need to consider when making your purchase. Owning a dildo is a revolutionary experience and the power will forever be in your hands. In all situations, make sure you’re buying your sex toys from reputable retailers who offers delivery and security guarantees, customer support and an easy returns process.
